The Affordable Care Act is designed to improve the health of the US population, enhance the patient’s experience in the health care system and reduce or contain health care costs. This year’s conference keynoter, Mary Chesney, PhD, RN, CPNP, Health Policy Chair of NAPNAP, will discuss the implications of the Affordable Care Act as it pertains to children and their families and share her insights from service to the NAPNAP organization.

Additional content for this year’s conference include topics of interest throughout the pediatric lifespan from infant development through adolescents. Check out the schedule for a look at this year’s topics! Participants will also have several opportunities for networking with colleagues across the state including exhibits and educational displays as well as a poster session of research projects by ARNP students.

OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this offering participants should be able to:
  1. Describe three implemented Affordable Care Act components that directly benefit families of children with special care needs.
  2. Discuss current state and national issues that affect nurse practitioner practice in Iowa.
  3. Utilize a case study approach to discuss issues of adolescent assent, consent and confidentiality.
  4. Discuss the management of pediatric bipolar and primary psychosis disorders.
  5. Describe the health effects of adolescent relationship abuse and guidelines for anticipatory guidance and education.
  6. Discuss the implications of advanced practice-related research projects being conducted by doctorate in nursing practice candidates.
  7. Describe the use of food desensitization in the management of pediatric food allergies.
  8. Discuss the diagnosis and treatment of cervical lymphadenitis in children.
  9. Identify indicators for chest radiography in children.
  10. Describe the damaging effects of exposure to second hand smoke on the health of children.
  11. Describe health concerns for student athletes using performance-enhancing sports aids in an effort to improve athletic ability.
  12. Examine early brain development in children and identify strategies for promoting language and cognitive development.
